Insurance & Claims
Does auto insurance cover hail damage?
Yes — if you have comprehensive coverage. Hail falls under comprehensive, not collision. Comprehensive covers weather events, theft, and acts of nature. Collision covers accidents you cause. Because hail is a weather event, filing a comprehensive claim generally does not affect your at-fault accident record or trigger a rate increase the way a collision claim would. If you only carry liability coverage, hail damage is not covered. Check your declarations page for the word "comprehensive" to confirm before filing.
Will filing a hail damage claim raise my insurance rates?
For most drivers, no — but it depends on your carrier and claim history. Comprehensive claims for weather events are not counted against you the same way an at-fault accident is. However, filing multiple comprehensive claims in a short period can prompt some carriers to reassess your policy at renewal. One hail claim on an otherwise clean record almost never affects rates. Before filing, call your agent and ask specifically: "Will this comprehensive weather claim affect my premium at renewal?" Get that answer in writing.
How long do I have to file a hail damage claim?
Most policies require filing within one year of the damage, but some carriers have windows as short as 60 days. The practical answer: file as soon as possible. Delays create two problems — repair shops fill up fast after major events, and adjusters become skeptical about whether damage is from the most recent event when significant time has passed. Photograph your vehicle immediately, note the date, and call your carrier within 48 hours. Even if you are unsure whether to file, opening a claim preserves your options.
Can I choose my own repair shop for an insurance claim?
Yes. In virtually every US state you have the legal right to choose your own repair facility. Your insurance company cannot require you to use a specific shop, though they may recommend one. Preferred shop programs benefit the insurance company through negotiated pricing — they do not necessarily benefit you. If your carrier directs you to a specific facility, you can decline and request your preferred PDR provider instead. A reputable PDR company will work directly with your carrier regardless of whether they are on a preferred list.
What is a supplemental insurance claim and do I need one?
A supplement is an additional claim filed when actual repair cost exceeds the original insurance estimate. This is extremely common with hail damage because adjusters working from photos or a quick walkthrough frequently miss damage on roof panels, door jambs, undersides of hood and trunk lids, and trim pieces. A thorough PDR inspection almost always identifies missed damage. Your repair shop files the supplement directly with your carrier at no cost to you. Never accept a low estimate without having an independent PDR technician review the adjuster's work first.
Do I need multiple estimates for a hail insurance claim?
No. There is no legal requirement to obtain multiple estimates for an insurance claim in any US state. Getting multiple estimates can actually slow your claim and create confusion about which documented damage belongs to which estimate. One thorough, well-documented estimate from a qualified PDR provider is sufficient. If your carrier disputes the estimate, your repair shop handles that conversation — not you.
What does zero out-of-pocket hail repair actually mean?
Zero out-of-pocket means you pay nothing from your own funds. This is possible through a combination of comprehensive insurance coverage and deductible assistance programs offered by some PDR companies. Your insurance pays the repair cost; the deductible assistance covers your deductible under qualifying circumstances. Not every customer qualifies — it depends on your policy, carrier, and extent of damage. A reputable PDR company reviews your situation during a free inspection and tells you exactly what to expect before you commit to anything.
Should I get my car inspected before or after calling my insurance company?
Get a professional PDR inspection first. If the damage is minor and the repair cost is close to your deductible, it may not be worth filing. A PDR inspection gives you the actual repair cost so you can make an informed decision before involving your carrier. If you call your carrier first, a claim may be opened on your record even if you ultimately decide not to proceed. Know what you are dealing with before making that call.
What if my insurance company's estimate seems too low?
Do not accept it as final. Low initial estimates are common — adjusters work quickly and miss damage that requires hands-on inspection to detect. Your right to a supplement means the estimate is a starting point, not a final number. A qualified PDR technician documents all damage including what the adjuster missed and submits a supplemental claim on your behalf. Insurance companies receive supplements from PDR providers constantly — this is standard process, not a dispute.
What happens if my hail damage claim is denied?
Denials are not final. The most common reasons are filing outside the claim window, pre-existing damage confusion, inadequate documentation, or damage misclassified by the adjuster. You have the right to appeal. Your state's Department of Insurance handles bad faith complaints and can assist with disputes. If your denial involves misclassified damage — particularly glass claims — a written professional assessment from a certified technician documenting the damage as hail-related can reverse a denial. Never accept a denial without understanding exactly why it was issued.

PDR, Repair & Glass
What is paintless dent repair (PDR)?
Paintless dent repair is a technique for removing dents from vehicle panels without sanding, body filler, or repainting. Trained technicians use specialized metal rods and picks to access the back of a dented panel and massage the metal back to its original shape from the inside. PDR preserves your original factory paint, maintains manufacturer warranty compliance, and is significantly faster and less expensive than traditional body shop repair. It has been the industry standard for hail damage since the 1980s and is accepted by all major insurance carriers.
What does hail actually do to a car panel?
Hailstones strike panels at high velocity and create inward depressions — typically round or oval — in the metal. The impact does not crack or damage paint in most cases because the metal deforms rather than shatters. Roof panels, hood, and trunk lid take the most direct vertical hits. Door panels, fenders, and quarter panels take angled hits and often show less severe damage. A single event can leave dozens to hundreds of individual dents across multiple panels — impossible to accurately count by eye from a standing position, which is why professional inspection matters.
Does hail damage car glass — and how do I know if my cracked windshield is actually from hail?
This is one of the most misunderstood topics in hail damage and it results in thousands of denied insurance claims every year. Here is the honest answer — including a simple field test any vehicle owner can do themselves.
THE FIELD TEST: Run your fingernail across the damaged spot on the outside surface of the glass.
If you can feel it on the outside — a rough spot, a chip, a raised edge, any texture — it is almost certainly road debris, not hail. Rocks and highway debris travel upward from the road and strike glass at an angle, leaving a mark you can feel on the outer surface. This is not a hail claim. Insurance companies deny these correctly.
If you cannot feel anything on the outside, check where the crack starts. If it originates at or near the edge of the glass — the border where glass meets the frame — this is worth professional evaluation. Glass edges are structurally the weakest point. A direct impact near an edge can cause fractures that travel inward, and these are reviewable claims.
If the crack starts in the middle of the glass with no outside surface damage and no edge origin, it is almost certainly thermal stress cracking. This is a pre-existing microscopic weakness — often from a previous small rock chip you never noticed — that finally gave way due to the rapid temperature change during and after the weather event. Cold rain on a warm windshield followed by heat causes glass to expand and contract. That invisible weakness becomes a traveling crack. Carriers know this pattern well and deny these claims routinely — correctly.
True hail impact on glass leaves a specific mark: a circular compression point with radial fracture lines — a bullseye. It is relatively rare because glass is more impact-resistant than metal. A car's hood and roof will show dozens of dents from the same event that left the windshield completely intact.
The bottom line: use the fingernail test, check the crack origin, and call a PDR professional for a free honest assessment before filing. A denied glass claim still goes on your record. Better to know the truth first.
Can PDR fix all types of dents?
PDR is highly effective for hail dents, door dings, and most round or oval dents where paint is intact. It is less effective on sharp crease dents, dents near panel edges, and any damage where paint has cracked or chipped. Technicians evaluate every dent individually during a free inspection and identify which repairs are ideal for PDR versus which may need traditional methods. A reputable PDR company never recommends PDR for damage that would produce a subpar result.
How long does hail damage repair take?
Most standard repairs complete in one to three days depending on the number and severity of dents. Minor single-panel jobs can sometimes be done same-day. Mobile PDR means no drop-off and no rental car in most cases. Work is typically scheduled around your availability including evenings and weekends for qualifying jobs.
Will my car look exactly like it did before?
Yes — when PDR is performed correctly by a certified technician on appropriate damage, the result is indistinguishable from factory condition. Technicians use PDR lighting boards that reveal every surface reflection and confirm complete dent removal before sign-off. A repair is not complete until the panel looks identical to an undamaged panel. Ask any PDR provider whether they back this standard with a written lifetime warranty before authorizing work.
Does PDR protect my car's resale value?
PDR protects resale value better than traditional body shop repair. Because original factory paint is preserved, vehicle history reports will not show paint work — a red flag for buyers and dealers. Traditional body filler and repaint shows up on paint thickness meters used by informed buyers. PDR-repaired vehicles routinely command the same resale value as undamaged vehicles of the same age and mileage.
What is a PDR light board and why does it matter?
A PDR light board has alternating light and dark stripes that reflect off the vehicle panel. Any remaining distortion shows up as a wavy or broken reflection rather than a straight line. Technicians use the board throughout the repair and at completion to verify the panel is perfectly flat. Without professional lighting equipment, complete dent removal cannot be reliably confirmed. Always ask whether your PDR technician uses a light board.
Do PDR repairs come with a warranty?
Reputable PDR companies provide a written lifetime warranty on all repairs for as long as you own the vehicle. If a repaired area shows any issue related to the work, it should be corrected at no charge. This warranty should be transferable if you sell the vehicle. Always ask for the warranty in writing before authorizing any repair.
Can PDR fix dents on aluminum panels?
Yes, though aluminum requires different technique than steel. Aluminum is more elastic and work-hardens faster, requiring slower and more deliberate manipulation. This is increasingly relevant on newer vehicles including Ford F-150s (aluminum body since 2015), Audi A-series, and most luxury vehicles. Confirm your PDR provider has specific aluminum panel experience before authorizing the repair.

What should I do immediately after a hail event to protect my claim?
Four steps right away. First, photograph your vehicle from all angles in good lighting while damage is fresh. Second, note the exact date, time, and location of the event. Third, call your insurance company within 48 hours to open a claim. Fourth, avoid automated car washes, which can scratch softened paint over fresh dents. Do not authorize any temporary repairs before your insurance inspection. Call Hail Depot and we walk you through every next step at no charge.
Can you repair any make and model of vehicle?
Yes. Cars, trucks, SUVs, and vans of all makes and models — domestic, import, luxury, and commercial. This includes aluminum-intensive vehicles like Ford F-150s and Audi A-series, and high-end vehicles where factory finish standards are especially critical. The only vehicles we do not service are motorcycles, which do not have the panel geometry suited for PDR.
What should I look for when choosing any PDR company?
Ask five questions before committing: Do your technicians hold current I-CAR certification? Do you use professional PDR light boards on every repair? Do you provide a written lifetime warranty? Do you handle insurance supplements directly with my carrier? Have you been operating continuously in this market for more than five years? A company that answers yes to all five is worth your trust.
